Chapter Eleven

Colt ran to Ace’s office. His brother was at the fridge, transferring vials of medicine into the black case he took with him on his calls.

Colt halted at the doorway. “I figured out what that truck was doing in our yard last night. Seems like we’ve been robbed.”

“What!” Ace almost dropped the vial in his hand, recovering just in time.

“The tack room is a mess. I’m guessing I scared them off when I came home last night. They got quite a bit of stuff, anyway, including Dad’s saddle.”

“Damn it. That saddle was worth about twenty thousand.”

“I know.” Colt leaned against the door frame, still recovering from the shock of it himself. “What do you think I should do?”

Ace glanced impatiently at his watch. “Think you could figure that out on your own?”

Colt reared at his brother’s tone. “Fine. I will. No need to bite my head off, Doc.”

“Look, I’m sorry, okay? I was supposed to be out at the Emerson ranch ten minutes ago.”

“Once they hear we were robbed, they’ll understand if you’re a few minutes late.”

“If their cow dies, I doubt it.” Ace closed his case and secured the latch. After giving a final look around to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything, he headed for the door. “Just call Duke at the sheriff’s office, okay? He’ll let you know what to do.”

Colt followed his brother, stopping at the truck to say hello to Flynn before continuing to the house. He found his mother perched on a stool at the kitchen island with her laptop, sipping coffee while she perused an online listing of bucking stock for sale. He thought about the deal he was working on. At some point he’d have to talk to his mother and Ace about it, but this wasn’t the time.

“Bad news, Mom. You know that truck we heard last night?”

She frowned and set down her mug. “Were they vandals?”

“Worse. Thieves.” He told his mother about the missing tack.

“Oh, no. Are you sure your father’s saddle is gone, too?”

“Afraid so.”

She was silent for at least a minute, probably thinking back to the Christmas morning when they’d blindfolded their father and led him out to the barn to see his “surprise.”

“It’s a pretty distinctive saddle, Mom. Maybe we’ll get it back when the thieves try to unload it.”

“I hope so.” Her mother looked wistful. “I don’t mind so much about the tack. It should be covered by insurance, anyway. But I sure do hate the idea of losing your father’s saddle.”

“Good thing we have a sheriff in the family. Dinah will track it down.” Colt pulled out his phone to give her a call.

His mother placed her hand over his phone. “Your sister’s away on a course, remember? Duke’s probably covering for her.”

Duke, Dinah’s deputy, was Beau’s fraternal twin, but he was closer to Ace than to Colt. All the boys had grown up together on Thunder Ranch, since the death of Duke and Beau’s mother when they were really young.
